Your Weekend Fun Read September 29, 2023

Hey there book lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes, coming at you with your weekend fun read for the final weekend of September 2023. I have coffee in my system, and my thinking cap is on, so let’s do this!!!

Let’s take a trip back to 1987. Oh, what a time…I was a senior in college, and on the weekends we went to the movies. My girlfriend was not really into horror movies, so I went alone to see ANGEL HEART starring Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro. Now, when I see a movie, I always look for “Based on the novel by…”, and I noticed this particular film was based on William Hjortsberg’s Falling Angel. I worked at the local flea market selling socks, and on breaks, I would go to vendors that I knew, and one of them was a book dealer. I asked if they had the book, and lo and behold they did! Needless to say, I bought it, took my treasure home, and read it in one night. Yes, you read that correctly, ONE NIGHT!!!

Edgar Award Finalist: The hunt for a vanished singer leads a detective into the depths of the occult in this “terrific” novel (Stephen King).
Big-band frontman Johnny Favorite was singing for the troops when a Luftwaffe fighter squadron strafed the bandstand, killing the crowd and leaving the singer near death. The army returned him to a private hospital in upstate New York, leaving him to live out his days as a vegetable while the world forgot him. But Louis Cyphre never forgets. Cyphre had a contract with the singer, stipulating payment upon Johnny’s death—payment that will be denied as long as Johnny clings to life. When Cyphre hires private investigator Harry Angel to find Johnny at the hospital, Angel learns that the singer has disappeared. It is no ordinary missing-person’s case. Everyone he questions dies soon after, as Angel’s investigation ensnares him in a bizarre tangle of black magic, carnival freaks, and grisly voodoo. When the sinister Louis Cyphre begins appearing in Angel’s dreams, the detective fears for his life, his sanity, and his soul.

This book was the first time I read a hybrid of detective/horror novels. It sucked me in from the first sentence, and did not let go! I highly encourage you to read this book. Oh, and if you remember Ninetoes Rule of Books and Movies, the book is always better, this one follows that rule, but just barely.

Falling Angel can be found in e-book form for $1.99. I a sure you can find a paperback version in a used bookstore.

Happy Reading!

The Ninetoes Book of the Week 09/24-30/ 2023

Hey there book lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes. I am coming at you with your book of the week for the last week of September 2023. I got my space helmet on, and coffee in my system, so let’s do this!

As I have stated before, if I am not reading, I am playing video games. Last week, Bethesda Games released their long-anticipated Starfield. This game is hitting me in all of my classic Science fiction-loving feels! It is making me think of the classic shows I grew up with. You know, shows like Star Trek and Space 1999. Incidentally, it still blows my mind that back then we thought we would have a base on the moon. BUT…the other thing it makes me think of is the Science Fiction grandmasters: Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert A. Heinlein. The first book that came to mind is Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Now, I am going to tell you that I only THOUGHT of this book, and ads for it have flooded my social media feeds. I smell conspiracy. No, not really, but….

For fans of Artemis—the visionary tour de force from “one of the grand masters of science fiction” (The Wall Street Journal).

Widely acknowledged as one of Robert A. Heinlein’s greatest works, The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress rose from the golden age of science fiction to become an undisputed classic—and a touchstone for the philosophy of personal responsibility and political freedom. A revolution on a lunar penal colony—aided by a self-aware supercomputer—provides the framework for a story of a diverse group of men and women grappling with the ever-changing definitions of humanity, technology, and free will—themes that resonate just as strongly today as they did when the novel was first published.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress gives readers an extraordinary, thought-provoking glimpse into the mind of Robert A. Heinlein, who, even now, “shows us where the future is” (Tom Clancy).”

I find it interesting that the blurb references Andy Weir’s Artemis. Does Artemis reference Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress? Nope. And Heinlein’s book came out six years before Andy Weir was born. Is there no respect for a classic? All kidding aside, both books are worthy reads, but my attention right now is on Heinlein’s book.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is available in paperback and e-book. It is $15.99 for the paperback and $14.99 for the e-book. I am sure you can find the paperback in a used bookstore or library.

Happy reading!

The Ninetoes Book of the Week 09/17-23/2023

Hey there book lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes, coming at you with your book of the week recommendation. I have coffee in my system, and my thinking cap on, so let’s do this!

Okay, there is a book I have been wanting to read for a very long time, but something else always came up. But no more I tell you! This is the time I finally knuckle down and go to the town of Lonesome Dove!

Lonesome Dove is Larry McMurtry’s epic western, and I do mean epic! It comes in at 864 pages long, so this one is going to take me a while. BUT I am up for the challenge!!!

The Pulitzer Prize–winning American classic of the American West that follows two aging Texas Rangers embarking on one last adventure. An epic of the frontier, Lonesome Dove is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

This one is a bit on the pricey side. The paperback is $19.99 and the e-book is $16.99. If you can find it at a used bookstore, I would encourage you to do so, otherwise go ahead and plunk down the money for it, you will not be disappointed.

Happy Reading.
